The Montreal High-end Audio Show 2006

With our ears still fresh, Linda and I returned to Pierre Gabriel's large room. After omitting them from a show or two, once again Pierre showcased his huge Grand Master tower loudspeakers.  They are basically a two-way design with a ribbon tweeter between six mid-woofers, dressed in a stunning veneer of unobtainium wood on the sides. There is only single wire capability due to Pierre's exclusive crossover network. As impressive as they appear to the eye, they are really gentle giants with 95dB sensitivity, capable of being driven with as few as five watts. Being based near Montreal, Pierre was able to bring many of the "big guns" from Jadis that were too difficult to take to CES. Although it was a two-channel stereo presentation, the entire floor between and behind the loudspeakers was filled with gleaming Jadis components accented with gold plate. Each piece had its own separate power supply — CD player, preamplifier, and each monoblock.

Everything was on its own special platform, and the cabling was by Pierre Gabriel although it is marketed under the Jadis name in Europe. In an effort to impress us with the speed and dynamics of this $200K system, Pierre played a drum cut that virtually put our heads inside the drum. If it had not sounded so good, I would have left the room. Obviously he was using a lot more than five watts. On other musical passages at more normal volume the sound was superb. The system was perfectly matched to the size of the large room, wanting for neither more power nor more space. Once again, Pierre had put it together with excellence. Around the perimeter of the room were grouped other Jadis components with other Pierre Gabriel loudspeakers. Each of the three groups represented appropriately priced CD players, integrated amplifiers and loudspeakers. The Jadis line was finally starting to make sense to me now. One thing is for sure, with their gleaming polished metalwork, presentation is as important as sound quality for Jadis. Pierre drew my attention to several new introductions in the line including the DA 50 Signature integrated amplifier at $8K with 30 watts per channel in pure Class A that can utilize a number of tube types. Also new was the DA 88 Signature at $13.5K. And it goes up from there with their separate pre and power amplifiers. Once again, Pierre had put together one of the Best Rooms at the show, not only for music this time, but for presentation as well.

''Finally, we cannot leave an audiophile show in Montreal without a visit to the venerable Jadis and Pierre Gabriel Room.

Here is a photo of the Grand Master, ($50,000) a hand crafted loudspeaker comprised of six cabinets, including a ribbon tweeter unit.

The front end of this system was the top of the line CD-transport from Jadis, their JD-1 Pro with outboard power supply ($25,000)

with their JS-1 converter (also with outboard power supply) ($15,000); the preamp was the Jadis JPS-2 dual mono preamp ($15,000);

amp was the JA 500 amplifier designed in Class A (providing 170 watts per channel (with 4 chassis)($40,000)

with all Peter Gabriel signature cable through out.

Playing Odetta in this room brought the many local audiophiles to their feet, clasping their hands,

expressing the usual “Mon Dieus” at the beauty and immersive nature of this system.''

---One of the highest cost-to-performance ratios came from a most unlikely source -Jadis.

Known for its super high-end electronics, Jadis has now moved into the more affordable relm with the

Orchestra Evolution integrated amp ($2995) and Symphonia Evolution CD player ($3495).

The system drove a pair of Pierre Gabriel Series  A  Evolution floorstanding loudspeakers that cost just $2495 the pair.

The entire system sounded like it should have cost $20K.

I listened for quite some time before discovering the price of the speakers.---

Product Review : Jadis / Pierre Gabriel Evolution Serie by Le Magasine Son et Image.

Pierre Gabriel often shows his mastery of loudspeaker and cable building with very expensive systems, but this year he put together a promotional system with a Jadis Evolution CD player and Orchestra Evolution integrated tube amplifier to drive his A-Series floorstanding loudspeakers. This is an interesting marketing technique that should appeal to music lovers who have no interest in the upgrading merry-go-round that most audiophiles ride.  Had I not seen these were his A-Series loudspeakers, I might have thought they were his more expensive model.  Taking the opportunity to run through a number of cuts on my black demo CD, I came to appreciate that these loudspeakers not only go flat to about 40 Hz, but they fall off very quickly and cleanly below that.  What they do not give you is an artificial bump in the mid-bass.  At first glance, this system seemed to suggest that less is more, but then I noticed the vibration absorbing shelves and cones below the Jadis components.I know how much such tweaks can contribute to sound quality.  With all its simplicity,this was one of the Best Rooms at the show — and a bargain at its promotional pricing.  Since last year, Pierre Gabriel has taken over distribution of Jadis for all of North America.
